Technique 8: Know When to Compromise

If you react to any conflict by engaging in an “eye-for-an-eye” philosophy, you will quickly sabotage yourself by damaging other relationships. Your goal should be either to leave the individual alone or help that person win—even if he or she created the conflict—because it is the only way you can win.

NOTE

When Jason heard that Thalia would receive the promotion he expected, his first reaction was to tell his co-workers she was a poor choice. Then, realizing that would look like sour grapes and potentially damage other relationships, Jason changed his mind. Two months later he received a promotion better suited to his talents. Both he and Thalia came out ahead.
