Technique 6: Choose Advisers Carefully

When relationship conflicts develop, you may feel a critical need to talk things over with others who can be objective. It is also therapeutic to do this. Whom should you select? On what basis?

Common sense tells us that it is smart to keep home-based problems away from work and some work problems away from home. This is especially true when you need to discuss a conflict involving a co-worker or family member. For example, it is probably best to discuss a serious work conflict with a mature outsider such as a spouse, friend, or professional counselor, unless you have an outstanding relationship with the co-worker(s) with whom you are in conflict. But talking freely about a home problem with co-workers may hurt productivity, your image, or possibly your relationships at home, especially if word gets back that you have been discussing details of your home life.
