CASE STUDY: RELATIONSHIP REPAIR LEADS TO REWARD

Three years ago Jim was promoted to office manager in a large financial institution. He quickly discovered his new supervisor Shelly had trouble communicating. Shelly was abrupt and did not seem at all interested in Jim’s career.

When Jim told his wife about Shelly’s communication problems, she suggested he schedule a time with her to discuss how they could best work together. At the first opportunity, Jim asked Shelly what he could contribute in his new role. The next day, Jim summarized Shelly’s expectations and delivered a list of work-oriented goals based on her comments. Jim asked for her critique.
