Chapter 27. Looking at the Big Picture

When people discover they are in a relationship conflict, few have the insight or experience to back away from it and look at the bigger picture before trying to repair the damage. Learning how to do this might enable you to approach the same situation differently, with far better results.

NOTE

Joe became so distressed over the relationship with his new supervisor that he almost resigned on the spot. Controlling his emotions, he and a friend took time to evaluate the conflict. When Joe and his friend assessed the situation from all angles (Joe’s seniority, experience, corporate friends, image, etc.), it became clear that Joe would be adopting self-sabotaging behavior if he let his supervisor get to him. It was hard on Joe’s ego but he decided to compromise and work to rebuild the relationship. Today Joe is a senior manager in the organization and his former supervisor is no longer with the company.
