Preface

Preface

The constructive handling of disagreement is central to personal satisfaction and organizational effectiveness. Improved skills in managing interpersonal differences will enrich your work, your relationships and your career.

This book will help you:

  • anticipate and prevent destructive conflict

  • deal with disagreement before it erupts out of control

  • use differences as a springboard to creative problem seeking and solving

  • manage disagreement with more skill and assurance

This revised edition reflects feedback received from trainers who used the book in their workshops on conflict management, leadership training, interpersonal communication, and managing diversity.

Several exercises, which help readers “learn from doing” as well as from reading, have been expanded. As you read through the book, you frequently will be invited to complete these clarifying exercises.

The structure of this book—and the structure of training programs based on the book—has three basic components:

  • Guiding Principles

  • Nine Approaches to Managing Disagreement

  • Four-Phase Process

Rather than pat prescriptions, possibilities are suggested that apply in practical, everyday situations—both at work and in your personal life.
