Step 1. Recognize Your Patterns

Most people bring relatively stable patterns of behavior, or styles, to the resolution of disputes. The common element in all of your disagreements is you. Therefore, start by gathering information about your own typical behavior. Although it’s difficult to see yourself as others see you, the following exercises will help you recognize patterns you’ve developed for dealing with conflict.

To benefit fully, complete each exercise as though you are personally involved and have a real stake in the outcome.
