Chapter 12. Communication Gaps > How Well do You Comprehend or Listen?

How Well do You Comprehend or Listen?

Since communication is a two-way process, it is as important to analyze how well you comprehend or listen to others as it is to know how well you express yourself. We spend more than half our day listening, yet we retain very little of what we hear. One study concluded that we hear half of what is said, listen to half of what we hear, understand half of that, believe half of that, and remember only half of that. Translated into an eight-hour day, it means:

We spend about four hours listening.

We hear about two hour’s worth.

We listen to one hour’s worth.

We understand 30 minutes of that hour.

We believe only 15 minute’s worth.

We remember just under eight minute’s worth.
