Conclusion

Volatile managers are the most common variety of aggressive managers. They run the gamut from people who are irritable from stress, anxiety, or depression and who briefly yell at you when you do not deserve it, to people with borderline or narcissistic personality disorder who may lose all judgment and fly into a rage in which they may hurt or kill themselves or you.

Easily and frequently upset, they take out their frustration on whoever has the misfortune of walking into their office. They can make your life miserable on a daily basis. Although they generally have no desire to hurt you, constantly facing their anger can be destructive. Not knowing when your boss will blow up, you are likely to keep your head low, avoid taking any chances or showing initiative, avoid the boss even if you have information he should be told, and redirect your energy away from work.
