Chapter 12. Volatile Managers > Organizational Impact of Volatile Managers

Organizational Impact of Volatile Managers

Volatile managers can have a very negative impact on an organization. One of the most malignant aspects of irritability is that it is highly contagious. Having someone frequently angry with you adds markedly to your stress level and can push you past your ability to contain your distress. Moreover, the behavior of one or more high-level volatile managers can negatively impact the culture and make it seem acceptable to snap at people. In time, the irritability can become an epidemic.

Faced with a volatile manager, many people seek to shield themselves by caring less about work and putting their energy elsewhere. Others stay committed but find themselves preoccupied with anxiety about being harshly criticized, and they are therefore unable to fully focus on productive activities. Many cease being creative and practice only tried-and-true, safe options that seem to carry less risk. People may also become less open to sharing information lest being the bearer of bad news will get them in trouble. Productivity, morale, retention, and recruitment all suffer.
