Chapter 15. Surviving Aggression > Coping with Aggressive People

Coping with Aggressive People

The first step in coping with aggressive people is assessing what lies underneath the aggression (Table 15-1). Only then do you design a game plan.

Table 15-1. Addressing Different Types of Aggression
Type of aggressionMost effective responses
FranticHelp the person to calm down. Decrease his or her workload.
IrritableHelp the person to solve problems and resolve conflicts; wait for the storm to pass—it won’t last long.
BullyAvoid the person at all costs.
RuthlessHelp the person understand the negative impact of his behavior on things he values and how he will benefit from altering his behavior.
Passive-AggressiveSet clear expectations for what needs to be done and when. Avoid long discussions in which the person can drain you with his or her negativism. Avoid making yourself vulnerable by giving the person work products that are crucial and must be done by a certain date.
