Conclusion

Eight percent of Americans develop PTSD at some time in their lives. Far more suffer from some painful and disruptive emotional reaction caused by an emotional trauma. PTSD can come from being in a situation that threatened injury, seeing someone else in such a situation, or even simply from hearing about a loved one having been in such a situation.

Those around the traumatized person see irritability and withdrawal. The victim suffers from these symptoms plus distress from frequently remembering the event, losing pleasure and interest in normal activities, and being easily startled and continually on edge. The symptoms can markedly impair the ability to work or have relationships.
