Emotional Intelligence Approach to Paranoid Managers

Dealing with Paranoid Bosses

Being around someone who does not trust you, who regularly reads malicious intent into your actions, and who bears grudges is very stressful. Withdrawing or attacking, however, will fuel such a person’s suspiciousness and make matters worse. Dealing with a paranoid boss requires considerable personal competence.

There are several key guidelines to keep in mind when dealing with paranoid people. First, you do not want to appear aggressive or threatening. It is not advisable to threaten to cut them down to size if they continue to behave in problematic ways. Doing so will increase their paranoia about you and could provoke an attack.
