How Rigid Managers Impact Companies

Rigid managers are obstacles in the way of organizational learning and productivity. The energy that people expend in dealing with them is lost to the real work of the company.

The meticulousness of rigid managers has value in certain situations. For example, when following or enforcing safety protocols, legal requirements, and customer service standards, it is valuable to have someone who cares about details and will not give in to temptations to cut corners. You want the person tuning your car to follow prescribed procedures, and even more importantly, you want the daycare center taking care of your child to follow guidelines. At other times, however, rigid adherence to rules serves little beneficial purpose and can markedly interfere with finding efficient ways to solve problems, produce products, and deliver services.
