Emotional Intelligence Approach to Grandiose Managers

Coping with Grandiose Superiors

Working for a grandiose manager is very stressful. Nevertheless, your attitude and actions can significantly affect your stress level when dealing with such people. Attempts to change their behavior toward you by standard methods such as telling them how their behavior makes you feel will not work. In general, trying to change the behavior of narcissistic superiors primarily leads to frustration. It is best to accept that they were so damaged in their emotional development that they lack the ability to empathize and behave reasonably. Keeping this in mind will help you not to take their criticism personally and to avoid arguing with their criticism, since doing so will only enrage them.

There are other steps you can take to avoid problematic situations with grandiose managers. One is to identify those situations and factors that lead to problems and avoid them when possible. For example, avoid gossiping with narcissistic managers, and do not borrow from them or lend to them. If you borrow things they will later insist that you pay them back. If they borrow they are likely to not return your things.
