Conclusion

Depression is a serious health issue affecting more than 20 percent of women and 10 percent of men during their lives. Some people develop severe episodes that last months to years with several of the following symptoms: difficulty enjoying things, loss of energy, loss of concentration, loss of self-esteem, changes in sleep and appetite, thoughts about death, and difficulty making decisions. Some people have mild, chronic depression that lasts years. In these cases, pessimism is often a major symptom. For some people, stress seems to set off the depression. For others, the depression seems to come from nowhere.

In many people the classic symptoms of depression will not be obvious. Instead, there will be a marked exacerbation of problematic personality traits such as irritability, rigidity, and narcissism. As a result, many will simply think that the person has a difficult personality and not realize that treatment for depression could rapidly improve the person’s performance, quality of life, and the quality of life of coworkers.
