Emotional Intelligence Approach to Compulsive Managers

Dealing with Compulsive Superiors

Compulsive bosses can make your life miserable. In addition to insisting you do things their way, their way is often wrong, since they are not good at learning new things, tend to excessively focus on details, and cannot see the forest for the trees.

Their disinterest in the opinions of others is also very frustrating, if not degrading. Creativity and initiative are damaged. They are stingy with compliments, allocation of needed resources, and salary increases. They have very limited interest in your emotional needs for support, praise, and encouragement or in your hopes and aspirations. They will not understand your family needs or hobbies or desire for a life outside of work. Their excessive focus on work and rejection of leisure time will generally lead them to pressure you to do the same.
