Chapter 11. Chauvinists Needing Diversit... > Emotional Intelligence Approach to C...

Emotional Intelligence Approach to Chauvinistic Behavior

When Your Boss Needs Diversity Training

You are in a particularly difficult situation when your boss is the one who needs diversity training. People in power are almost uniformly allergic to being criticized by subordinates. Nevertheless, there are things you can do.

As with all toxic people, the (emotional intelligence) EI approach begins by assessing what you are dealing with. Is your boss being a chauvinist from cluelessness, as a result of his cultural/family background, or from a need to deal with insecurities about himself? The more deeply seated the problem, the more difficult it will be to effect change. Perhaps even more important than what lies underneath the behavior is how narcissistic your boss is and therefore how open he or she will be to criticism, self-reflection, and possibly changing.
