Dealing with Managers with Bipolar Disorder

Realizing that the problem may be bipolar disorder is the crucial first step. It alerts you that the person’s judgment and condition may rapidly deteriorate. You do not want this person handling key accounts or controlling large sums of money while they are impaired.

This does not mean that you do not want them in your company. It only means that you need to monitor them more closely than you do the average manager and that there must be a way to constrain their decisionmaking power when they are sliding into poor functioning. Many people go years between episodes. Some people are highly productive during a hypomanic episode. Medication can decrease the frequency and severity of episodes.
