The Supervisor’s Role

What is a supervisor?

  • Teacher He (or she) is a teacher. He will not only teach you the routine of your new job, but he will also have a great influence on your attitude toward your job and the company. He has a reservoir of knowledge, skills, and techniques that you need to learn. You will be most fortunate if he is a good teacher. If he is not, you will have to learn from observation.

  • Counselor He is a counselor. His job is to see that you live up to your potential. He may need to correct errors you are making. He may need to give you tips on improving yourself as an employee. He may feel the need to have a heart-to-heart talk with you at times.

  • Leader He is a leader. More than anything else, your supervisor must provide the leadership your department requires. He must provide motivation for all employees. He must earn your respect—not by being soft and easy, but by being a strong leader who will help you build a long-range career.
