Chapter 4. When People Step on Your Atti... > Protect Yourself So It Won’t Happen ...

Protect Yourself So It Won’t Happen Twice

Some people will step on your attitude once and, if they get away with it, will step on it again. The behavior of some people is such that they are either insensitive to your needs or they do not give you the respect you deserve. Some supervisors are this way. Some family members or co-workers are this way. In these situations you need to protect your attitude by standing up for yourself, isolating yourself from the individual, or using other techniques to open up a two-way discussion with this person so that you and your attitude will be treated with respect and sensitivity.

Hank. Hank’s boss kept stepping on his attitude by making unkind snide remarks, giving him undesirable assignments, and generally treating him like a second-class employee. Finally, Hank asked for a private appointment and confronted his boss with the question: “Am I not entitled to the same kind of treatment as my co-workers?” Hank’s boss replied: “I was only testing you. You have now made the grade, so we will have a different kind of relationship from now on.”
