Case 22: Interview

The following answers can be considered models:

  1. “In doing my pre-interview investigation, I discovered that you have an ambitious expansion program and that you have an excellent reputation within the industry for treating people fairly. These features appeal to me.”

  2. “I will bring my present professional sales skills with me—I feel competent in organizing client data, in my ability to close sales, and about handling rejection—and I would develop other skills such as handling objections on your product line. My goal would be to reach a role where my leadership would help build a stronger organization through teamwork and a balanced emphasis on productivity and sales.”

  3. “I have concentrated on developing my human-relations competencies. I can build good relationships with co-workers and superiors. When I make a mistake, I can repair a relationship. I have received compliments for my skills in problem solving. I am also sensitive to the needs of others. I am a good listener. I understand the positive associations between high productivity and good human relations—especially where clients are concerned.”

  4. “I have trouble maintaining my enthusiasm over a long period of time, and I tend to scatter my energy in too many directions. I’m working to make improvements in both areas.” (NOTE: Giving more specifics on how you are turning your weaknesses into strengths will focus you and the interviewer on your positive vs. negative attributes.)
