Tip 10: Send Out Positive Verbal and Nonverbal Signals

There are many verbal signals you can use to create a good first impression. “Good morning” and “Thank you” are examples. Such easy signals of friendship should be transmitted with sincerity at every opportunity to acknowledge the presence of others and to recognize any courtesies they have extended to you, however small.

A friendly person—one who creates a good first impression—is also one who uses nonverbal signals. for example, a person with a ready smile is easily interpreted as a friendly person. The smile seems to break any psychological barriers that might exist in a meeting of strangers. You immediately feel adopted by the person who smiles. A smile, then, is a friendly, nonverbal signal.
