Chapter 14. Succeeding in a New Job or A... > Tip 1: Balance Home and Career

Tip 1: Balance Home and Career

When you accept a new work challenge, it is vital that all home demands be under complete control. Your on-the-job concentration needs to be at a high level, and any home worries, especially those connected with small children or other relatives, can be distracting to both you and your co-workers. Balancing home and career, so that you can be a winner in both areas, is never easy to accomplish and maintain. The time to start (or reorganize) is before you accept a new job or assignment. Once things are out of balance, it may be too late for you to reach your full job potential. Give your career a break and get things organized at home first.

When it is necessary to call in ill, make every effort to talk with your supervisor or another management person. If a co-worker tells your boss you won’t be in, doubts may be raised and your supervisor could call you for verification. Also, it never hurts to bring in a doctor’s statement to document an extended absence.
