Sensitivity

When you demonstrate the self-confidence that practicing good human relations produces, new career doors automatically open. You may or may not choose to enter such doors, but it will be personally rewarding to know they are open.

Your transition into a supervisory role should be smooth because all the human-relations competencies you practice as an employee can be transferred to your new role. In fact, some skills will make more sense to you as a supervisor. For example, having tried, perhaps unsuccessfully, to build a relationship with a difficult supervisor, you will be more sensitive to the problem once you are there yourself. Knowing how a conflict between two co-workers can injure the productivity of all, you will pick up on such situations faster and intervene sooner. Knowing the rewards your supervisor could have given you but didn’t, you will be more sensitive to your employees’ need for recognition. This is what happened to Geraldine.
