Chapter 2. Human Relations Can Make or B... > Why Is Human Relations More Importan...

Why Is Human Relations More Important Today Than It Was Thirty or Forty Years Ago?

There are many reasons. Here are five of the most important ones:

  1. In previous years, more employees worked alone and therefore did not have to concern themselves with the interpersonal relationships that are necessary to achieve high standards of excellence in a modern business enterprise.

  2. Today more workers are employed in service occupations where the future of the organization depends on how well the customer is served. Customer service makes human relations more important throughout the company.

  3. Higher productivity among employees is the key to improved profit and an increase in the standard of living for all people. In order to build superior work teams, employees need greater competence in human-relations skills.

  4. More and more supervisors are being trained in human relations. Training can cause a supervisor to set higher human-relations standards and to expect greater human-relations efforts from all employees.

  5. The modern work force is composed of a more varied mix of personalities and cultures. Thus, the necessity—and challenge—of building strong human relations with all kinds of people is greater.
