Case 13 Communication

“Everybody has a problem these days.”

Jack, a United States-born, European-educated biochemist, was disturbed emotionally after a late afternoon meeting. Why? Because it was just announced that Yoshio had received the appointment as manager of their bio-tech research team. It wasn’t that Yoshio had not earned the promotion through his contribution to the team. Everyone recognized his skills. Besides, Yoshio also had seniority. Jack’s negative reaction was based upon the premise that Yoshio was not a good communicator, and everyone on the team would suffer because of it. In Jack’s opinion, Yoshio had not fully adapted to American ways. At times he was insensitive to the needs of co-workers. He was also a poor speaker in front of a group, and his leadership style was over-permissive.
