Case 23 Focus

“I’ll adjust later.”

Up until about a year ago, Cathy made monthly deposits to her savings account. When shortly thereafter she took a higher paying job, Cathy was sure she could get back to saving again. But, instead, she has continued to “dip” into her savings and is now using these funds to pay for her maxed out credit cards. She is facing serious debt. Just last week, her boss told her that her positive attitude has slipped, her interaction with fellow employees is deteriorating, and she seems disinterested in her work. Furthermore, her tardiness (as a result of her “quick” shopping trips to the nearby mall) is chronic. If she doesn’t get back on track, she may lose her job. Shopping is what gives Cathy a boost—isn’t it? At least she thought it did until she really stopped to analyze it. Has she lost focus?
