Chapter 7. Seeking Purpose Through the Life Cycle

From the time you are born until the time you die, you are growing and changing. As you go through life, you need to complete specific developmental tasks before you move on to the next stage. You are no doubt familiar with the developmental tasks of childhood and adolescence. When you reach adulthood, it is easy to think you are through with these tasks. Of course you recognize that there will be changes: marriage, children, career moves, empty nest, aging parents, retirement, and so on. But you may not have related these external events to your internal emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth.

The question “What is my purpose?” means different things depending upon where you are in your life cycle. If you are in your 20s, this question is often about what job to take, what course of study to pursue, if to marry or not, if to have a family or not.
