Chapter 39. Rethinking the Quest for “More”

The mantra in Western (and particularly American) culture toward the end of the 20th century and into the 21st has been “more, more, more.” Even spiritual seekers were being seduced by it, collecting spiritual experiences and practices like any other commodity. Then came the dot-com collapse and the tragedy of September 11, 2001, which became wake-up calls inviting many people to rethink their values and what is really important.

You have lost your purpose when you think that what you do is less important than how much you get paid for doing it. You are off purpose when choosing meaningful work is less important than choosing work that pays well. When “more” is the driver, enjoying life takes a back seat to having a lifestyle.
