Chapter 9. Does Busyness Equal Success?

Our society often equates success with busyness. In some circles, the more hours you can say you work, the more you are respected. That is the opposite of how it has been throughout recorded history. In the past, a sign of success was the ability to have time that was not committed. Having leisure time—the time to contemplate the world and the time to ask questions such as “Why am I here?”— was considered a sign of success. But not today.

To equate success with busyness has created problems. After trying to accomplish more, we are suffering the consequences: increased stress, illness, alienation from loved ones, and an overwhelming feeling of time poverty. These are symptoms of a life that is out of balance.
