Chapter 30. Replacing Negative Self-Talk... > Rules for Effective Affirmations

Rules for Effective Affirmations

Affirmations are statements you make to yourself that describe the life you want. They can be about anything. You might start with affirmations related to your self-esteem. The more you like yourself, the more you will trust yourself and the more likely you are to share your gifts with the world. For any affirmation to be most effective, keep in mind the following rules:

Rule #1:. State affirmations in the present tense.

Your behavior tends to mirror what you believe. When you state something to yourself as if it were true today, your behavior will come into alignment with the belief more quickly than if you state it as being true in the future. For example, if you are looking for a new job, you will not get as positive a result saying “I will find a good job” as if you were to affirm “I have the job I desire.”
