Restating Shoulds to Reflect Your Values

Most of us know what we should do, but it is far more difficult to articulate what we value. Look back over your list of shoulds. Are any of them actually values for you? Write down in the space provided any shoulds that actually reflect values you have. To shift your shoulds to values, you will need to change the way you talk to yourself. Instead of saying, “I should do volunteer work” (which creates guilt), try saying, “I choose to donate time to community service.” Other words you can use to replace your shoulds are “I want” and “I prefer.”
