Accepting Life as It Comes

You do have an alternative to meaning-making. That alternative is called acceptance; or in some spiritual traditions, the word surrender is used. You can accept life as it presents itself to you. You can simply be with whatever is happening (although it takes considerable discipline and practice) without judging it positive or negative, good or bad. Acceptance is not passive. It is an active process that may require action from you. It takes someone with an advanced spiritual practice to accept life as it is, moment to moment, without adding interpretation.

As a practice, try noticing yourself as a meaning-maker. Before you settle on an interpretation of a situation, ask yourself these questions:
