Preface

Preface

Originally, our decision to write this book sprang from the interest in the idea of empowering others, and our experience as training consultants that only self-empowered people were very good at empowering others. We have learned that many organizations have used this book to help people learn about being more accountable for their own decisions and actions as well as being more effective with other people.

In revising this book, we have retained the original content that was designed to help you, the reader, improve your personal effectiveness and success by building your self-esteem and by improving your goal-setting, planning, and skills for interacting with others. We also have added the objective of helping you to be the kind of person who is comfortably accountable for your own choices and behaviors. Workers who demonstrate competence, loyalty, and a positive attitude are the most likely to be selected for empowerment by their managers. Managers expect employees at all levels to be accountable for their decisions and actions, and self-empowered employees are most likely to live up to that expectation.

Our new book, Accountability: Managing for Maximum Results, is designed to help managers work with their employees to produce this outcome. (Be sure your manager reads it!) In this book you will learn how to become self-empowered and accountable. To get the best results it is important for you to complete each exercise, practice the recommended techniques, and immediately start the process of self-empowerment. We wish you success!
