It is possible for confrontation to be respectful and even caring. Confrontation can be appropriate and valuable for the person being confronted. After all, how can people improve and change behaviors that affect others negatively if no one will let them know they are doing something that is a problem?

The key to ensuring that confrontation produces positive outcomes is handling confrontation skillfully. A caring confrontation involves four steps:
