Prompting Signals

To encourage the speaker to open up or elaborate, you can say: “Tell me more,” “Please continue,” “Go on,” or ask: “Then what happened?” “What more would you like me to know?” or “What are your thoughts on that?” These are open directives or questions that allow the speaker to say whatever she wants to communicate. They do not have the pitfalls of the closed or specific question. But these signals do not prove that you have heard anything correctly.
