Chapter 20. Interacting with Your Employ... > CASE STUDY: Delegating or Dumping?

CASE STUDY: Delegating or Dumping?

Marvin asks Tony and Ellen to join him in his office. He says to Tony, “The monthly production figures are too hard to use, and it’s taking too much of my time to analyze all this stuff. Take this report and summarize each section for me. Also break out the comparison figures for the improvement over last year for each team. I’ll want you to do this for me each month, Tony, okay?” Tony responds, “Uh, sure. I’ll get right on it.”

Marvin turns to Ellen and says, “Ellen, I’ve been getting lots of complaints from the shop supervisors that the support staff are uncooperative. They’re going to have to understand that their job is to provide assistance to everyone in this organization and that includes the shop supervisors. I need you to get that across to them.” He looks expectantly at Ellen who answers, “I’ll talk to them in the staff meeting Monday, but I know they are going to complain that the shop supervisors don’t give them enough time to...” Marvin interrupts Ellen and says, “I don’t want the hear their excuses. I want you to make sure they start doing a better job! That’s all. You both can get back to work now.”
