Agreement

If the listener agrees with the speaker’s opinions or position, the speaker may decide to do something foolish because he heard that he is “right.” Later he will blame the listener for encouraging him. In situation 5, if the listener agrees to the directions by saying “Okay,” the risk is that part of the instructions were misunderstood and an unnecessary mistake could occur.

A New Approach

This may be valuable. We are not telling you that these popular listening responses are always wrong. There is often no adverse effect when you respond in these ways. However, any time you use one of these responses you take a risk that you will end up in a conflict situation that could have been avoided if you had used a different listening approach. We will explain how to respond differently before concluding this section.
