Chapter 28. Diffusing Emotional Reactions > Summarizing the Confrontation

Summarizing the Confrontation

This series of interactions is typical of how a confrontation will evolve if the confronter knows how to handle the defensive responses. With a little empathy and understanding, Kerry became less defensive each time and allowed Liu to patiently return to the problem and a need for a solution.

Liu must not allow Kerry to get Liu to do the work. This would repeat the pattern they have been following, which results in Liu playing the role of Rescuer. Rescuing may solve the immediate problem, but it almost guarantees a continuation of the pattern of Kerry not doing the work and Liu picking up the slack.
