Chapter 9. Recognizing Selective Perception

As you are learning, the challenge in building self-empowerment is becoming aware of attitudes and expectations and changing those that are self-defeating. This includes expectations of ourselves and of others. A part of this is the filtering process called selective perception. We constantly filter out many of the sights and sounds around us, allowing only a manageable amount through from our subconscious mind to our conscious awareness. This is necessary for our sanity.

A simple example of this is what happens after you purchase a new car. Don’t you suddenly start noticing all of the cars on the road like yours? Those cars were there all along, of course, but you noticed them only when you changed your expectations and awareness.
