SUCCESS CARD 4: Know Their Goals & Define Yourself

Know Their Goals

Now that your goals and action steps are set, you need to know the objectives of the people in the positions of power around you. To get ahead in this game, you must be clear about their goals because they can influence your rate of success. A good place to start is by looking at the mission and vision statements of both the organization and its customers or constituents. What do the statements tell you about the organizations' goals and values? Do the leaders “walk the talk”? We hope that they do and that their fundamental values match yours. If not, your next move could be to look for employment elsewhere.

“I realized it was time.”

I've been a physician for about twenty-two years. The medical field was different when I started my practice. It used to be more personal and performed at a slower pace. I had time to get to know my patients and provide more personalized care in the old days. But now, everything has changed. To reduce my costs and overhead, I joined a group practice that I thought would allow me to practice medicine in the way I was accustomed. But this practice is actually owned by a company that is interested only in the bottom line. It pushes us to see more patients every day and to spend less time with each. I'm working really long hours and am not in control of my schedule. I'm seeing less of my family and miss quite a few of my kids' activities. It's time for me to move.
