Chapter 10. The Flexibility Hand > SUCCESS CARD 48: Let Go

SUCCESS CARD 48: Let Go

Living an active life means living through setbacks and failures. Try asking anyone you know, What's the last thing you did that was perfect? See what kind of response you get. Most people will not be able to come up with much. Getting through imperfect, difficult days, weeks, and months is a challenge for anyone, and people who get through most successfully are able to engage in some form of letting go. Some people exercise; some write poetry or call old friends. Others talk to themselves.

“I have this mantra.”

You know how you say little things to yourself all the time to spur yourself on—like Hurry up, don't be late or Lose those pounds, lose those pounds? It's as if you have a mantra or a self-talk script of some sort. Well, in times of stress, my self-talk has always been, Put it in perspective, Lou, just put it in perspective. I know this sounds a bit academic, but that's what helps me adjust my attitude. I think I read it in an article somewhere a long time ago, and it just stuck. It's taken me a while to really use this well. I mean it's one thing to say something positive and it's another thing to really put it into action. Like when traffic is bad—that's when I usually practice my mantra. The more severe the situation, the harder it gets to make the mantra work; for example, if I'm really angry with somebody or when I lose a major account at work. But if I can just repeat it and believe it, I can always adjust my attitude.
