3.2. Selection

Selection is the primary operation that the user invokes on a widget. For example, when the user clicks on a button, chooses an item in a list, or drags a scroll bar, they are selecting the widget. Selection is normally performed when the user presses and releases the mouse but need not be initiated using the mouse at all. For example, pressing the space bar (on most platforms) while keyboard focus is on a push button will select the button. Every widget that interacts with the user provides selection, but some widgets provide additional operations. For example, a tree widget can be expanded or collapsed as well as selected.

Default selection is the secondary operation (or sometimes the “default” operation) that the user invokes on a widget. When the user double-clicks in a list or presses the <Enter> key in a text control, the default selection operation is invoked.
