Chapter 19. Images > Loading Images

19.4. Loading Images

In the Class ImageData and Class Image sections, we described how to load images from files and input streams, using constructors. These constructors are sufficient for many applications, but they suffer from several limitations.

  • Some image file formats, such as GIF, are capable of representing several images in a single file. The constructors can access only the first image.

  • The constructors only load images. Many applications also need to save images, that is, to be able to create image files from images that they have produced internally.

  • Once the constructors have been invoked, they do not return until the image has been completely read from the file or stream. Because of this, they cannot be used in applications such as Web browsers, which incrementally display images as they are being loaded.
