VRML Lite

After it became obvious that the VRML97 specification engendered browsers that were too big and overly complicated, VRML architects Rikk Carey and Gavin Bell proposed a subset of VRML that eventually became known as "VRML Lite." VRML Lite excluded a number of VRML97 nodes, among them the predefined primitive shapes and the PROTO mechanism that allowed developers to extend VRML.

The VRML community, however, decided that VRML Lite wasn't worth pursuing, and the idea withered on the vine for lack of support. Surprisingly, the basic concept of VRML Lite has reappeared in many of today's X3D proposals. As you'll learn in the next chapter, X3D is shaping up to be a functional subset of VRML that is capable of being expressed in terms of XML.
