Document Type Definitions (DTDs) in Detail

This section provides a more detailed description of XML DTDs. XML 1.0 declares symbols and rules for any XML document. A DTD declares the symbols and rules in your document. Using a DTD you can:

  • Prove a document is of the type you need

  • Quickly find errors in the structure of documents, including ones that are hard to spot using just your eyeballs

  • Specify default values for named things

  • Use the information in the DTD to create and modify other applications, such as editors. By this technique, you can create documents that are correct by construction; after that, you don't need the DTD again until you modify the document or the editor.
