What Is XML?

The most widely used language on the Web today is HyperText Markup Language, or HTML. HTML is an application of its parent standard, ISO 8879, the Standard Generalized Markup Language, or SGML.

In 1996–97, work was initiated in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to create a subset of ISO 8879 SGML for use by Web applications. The result was the Extensible Markup Language (XML), which specifies SGML features that Web markup applications share. XML has quickly become the most widely and rapidly implemented of the W3C recommended practices (visit the W3C at http://www.w3.org/ for details related to the XML and SGML).
