Sniffers

Although a number of VRML browsers are freely available today, you can't be certain that everyone visiting your VRML-enhanced pages will actually have one installed. Fortunately, Web browsers are smart enough to inform those without a VRML browser that they won't be able to view the contents of an associated EMBED or OBJECT tag unless they install a corresponding plug-in. Novice users, however, won't necessarily know what to do when such a notice appears.

A more helpful approach involves "sniffing" the end user's Web browser for the presence of a VRML plug-in, allowing you to direct those without one to a page of your own that describes in more detail the installation process they must go through. Typically, these so-called "sniffers" are client-side scripts written in the JavaScript language, although other scripting languages (such as VBScript) are also capable of interrogating Web browsers.
