Chapter 6. WEAVING VRML INTO WEB PAGES >  JavaScript Popup Windows

JavaScript Popup Windows

VRML files can be displayed inside of popup windows that are dynamically created from within a standard HTML Web page. Because the size of the popup window determines the dimensions of the VRML file loading directly into it, and the window's size is specified at the time it is created, you can control the dimensions of the VRML world loaded into it. Unfortunately, HTML doesn't inherently support popup windows, and so you must turn to a client-side scripting language such as JavaScript if you wish to display VRML content using this technique. (Alternately, you can weave your VRML worlds directly into the fabric of HTML pages using the EMBED or OBJECT elements described later in this chapter.)

JavaScript, as you're probably well aware, is a popular Web-page scripting language developed by Netscape Communications Corp., in cooperation with Sun Microsystems, and introduced with version 2 of Netscape Navigator. JavaScript is sometimes thought of as a "lightweight" alternative to Java, although in truth the two are more different than they are similar.
