Shapes, Geometry, and Appearance

Most of the 3D objects that appear in VRML worlds are the result of Shape nodes at work. Shape nodes are used to render objects based on two key attributes: geometry and appearance. Geometry gives a shape form (such as a box, spiral, or pyramid form), while a shape's appearance describes surface attributes such as color, lighting, and texture. Every Shape node has geometry and appearance fields, which together determine how an object looks.

The source code that is found earlier in the "Nodes" section shows the basic Shape node in action, for which the formal definition is:
